Senior Canadianist guest edits special issue of Intersections

A senior Canadianist, Dr. Subhash Chandra, who was awarded Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute’s Faculty Research Fellowship in 2002 and worked at the University of Toronto on ‘Multiculturalism and the Print Media in Canada’, has made substantial contribution to Canadian Studies in particular and Gender/Sexuality Studies in general. Subsequent to his fellowship, he presented papers on this subject in Israel, Canada and India, including the Keynote address at the two-day seminar titled ’Shades of Grey: Multiculturalism in Canada’ at Jadavpur University, Kolkata. He also published his book: Lesbian Voices: Canada and the World: Theory, Literature, Cinema (2006). He presented a paper titled ‘ A Multiniched Haven: Lesbianism and Canadian Cultural Pluralism’ at ICC Ottawa Conference in 2008 and the paper has now been published in the Conference anthology of select essays, Canada Exposed.

He has recently Guest Edited the Special Issue, 22, of a prestigious international refereed academic On-line journal, Intersections: Gender and Sexuality in Asia and the Pacific, published by the Australian National University, Canberra. The title of the Special Issue is ‘Face(t)s of Woman: Gender in the Indian Cultural Context’ and its contents include (i) genre: essays on fiction, cinema, theatre, and folklore; (ii) language: essays on literatures in English, and English translation from Bengali, Kannada, and Tamil (iii) region: articles on women’s positioning in metropolitan cities, on the one hand and tribal regions on the other, as also in north and south of India, and (iii) sexuality: an article on a transgender theatre actor and an interview with a transgender activist, both located in Kolkata. The website for the Journal is: http://intersections.anu.edu.au/ The Special Issue will be of interest to Canadian scholars visiting India on fellowships to work on gender and sexuality issues in India, as also Indian scholars engaged in comparative studies on Canada and India in this field.

Dr. Chandra has also been nominated to the International Editorial Advisory Board of Intersections.
